John Caple cover A unique publication about Somerset artist John Caple, designed entirely by the artist, exploring the stories and traditions of this region through his visionary paintings. The book includes an introduction by playwright and novelist Nell Leyshon.

For generations John Caple’s family have been farmers and land-workers in the Mendips. Much of Caple’s art is concerned with the land, its inhabitants and the folklore of this area of Somerset. He began to paint about the collective folk memory of the Mendips: the festivals that still lingered on in certain villages, the healers and the cures, fortune-tellers, witches and ‘cunning men’. His neighbours still knew which house ‘Cunning Beacham’ used to live in; a relative might remember the way to repel an adder bite and how to use a heart charm to bring love. You are still as likely to find a magic charm as a bus ticket in a Somerset pocket.

John Caple is represented by the John Martin Gallery. Limited edition prints of selected images by John Caple are available from KeyWest Editions.

Andrew Gifford was born in Sheffield in 1970. He is recognised as one of the most innovative young landscape painters working today. 'Andrew Gifford' shows the full range of the artist's work, from paintings of urban cityscapes as diverse as gritty northern English towns, Paris and Berlin to the airy spaces of the French landscape, where he now lives. An introductory text by Elspeth Moncrieff also explores Gifford's motivations and approach to painting, as well as his large-scale 'Light Works' installations.

Andrew Gifford is represented by the John Martin Gallery.

Derek Holland was born in Chesterfield in 1927. During the 60s and early 70s his large colourfield paintings were regularly exhibited at London’s Redfern Gallery. However, he later began to make drawings of the rural towns and villages of northern France; back in the studio these became the starting point for further exploration. Gradually, the paintings became ever looser and the colours more intensely high key, and his final mature style developed; the increasingly restless brushmarks blending together into a sublime radiant harmony.

Produced for the exhibition ‘Paintings of Brittany’ first shown at Plymouth Arts Centre, Aug–Sep 2000.

Kurt Jackson is acclaimed as one of Britain's finest landscape painters. In an extensive interview the artist talks frankly about his life and work, the rigours of plein air painting and his remarkable mixed media technique.

Nearly 100 illustrations depict the full range of Kurt's subject matter, from the secluded bays of the West Penwith coast to the traditional working environment of the South Crofty miners. Above all, the sea in all its moods is a constant presence; under lowering Atlantic skies or sparkling with brilliant sunshine.

Although awaiting reprint, a few copies of this title are still available from White Lane Press.

This new publication is the first complete survey of the artist's abstract work.

In an era when derivative art is prevalent, Diane Nevitt’s paintings stand out for their sensitivity, skill and originality. Working with no preconceived idea of how the finished painting should be, she responds subconsciously with the colour, shapes and marks she uses to a mood or feeling connected to her experience of events and places.

The inspiration for her recent work is curiously idiosyncratic: the dramatic shoreline of Lake Garda; an installation of strange animal sculptures accompanied by Michael Galasso’s haunting music; a train journey through the Dolomites to the old spa town of Merano; the orange groves of rural Mallorca. However, no matter what the subject matter, it is always Diane Nevitt’s poetic colour sense and unique vision that remain foremost.

The 38 self-portraits collected in this book span the artist’s whole career. From his first paintings as an earnest fifteen-year-old boy, working in Room No. 3 of the Hotel Shemtov, the Jewish hotel run by his parents in Cricklewood in the post-war years, to the haunting last self-portrait in hospital shortly before his death in Plymouth aged sixty, these images make for an encyclopaedia of the artist’s changing styles and philosophical interests down the years.

‘Skill is a faculty that is half-asleep,’ said Lenkiewicz, yet his self-portraits transcend mere technique and confront the spectator with the fully alert and unflinching gaze of an artist profoundly interested in ‘the business of living’.

This book formed the catalogue to the exhibition Robert Lenkiewicz: Self-Portraits 1956-2002 at the Ben Uri Gallery, The London Jewish Museum of Art in 2008.

Fred Yates cover png The first major publication about this popular artist. A journal of Fred Yates’ progress through France between the years 1992 to the present day, using his own words from letters, journals and other correspondence. Lavishly illustrated with over 70 colour images.

Born in Manchester in 1922, Fred Yates worked as an insurance clerk, before serving as a Grenadier Guardsman in the war. He taught art for many years, then moved to Cornwall, where he started to paint full-time. His idiosyncratic paintings are easily identified by their brilliant vibrant colour, often squeezed straight from the tube. The apparent naïve style masks a sure skill in creating his world of Manchester city life, Cornish villages and French landscapes, populated by his familiar cast of characters. Fred Yates moved to France in the early 1990s where, now in his mid-eighties, he continues to paint as obsessively as ever.
